Sometimes, you can catch the dancing bug without really being sure which style interests you most. There’s no doubt that taking a dance class is not only a great way to meet new people, but it also challenges your body and allows you to have fun while you exercise. However, the style of dance that you choose to practice can make all the difference on your overall experience.
So unless you already have some experience and are simply looking to get back into dancing after taking some time away, it’s important to think about which technique may be best for you before signing up for a class. Here are a few questions to ask yourself:
What appeals to you?
For most, the urge to take up dance arises after seeing someone else perform, whether it be at a dance club, on the Broadway stage or on one of today’s popular TV dancing shows. Think about the style of dance that caught your attention and made you say, I want to be able to do that! What was it about that style that drew you in? Maybe that it was slow and sensual, or that it was upbeat and energetic. Once you know what appeals to you, try out that style of dance and see how it resonates with your body and your soul.
How physically demanding do you want to go?
Dancing is a great way to get your cardio in, but some dances may prove to be more difficult regarding the technique and styling. That isn’t to say that you can’t work up to those styles down the road, but as a starting point, choosing a dance style that is centered around slower, smoother movements may be the best option.
What are your goals?
Everyone has a different reason for wanting take dance classes. For some, it’s to burn as many calories as possible without having to run on a boring treadmill. For others, it’s less about exercise and more about getting out and having fun with something new. What do you want to get out of your dance experience?
Once you have the answers to these questions, share them with your dance instructor and get her feedback. For social dancing, it is beneficial to get familiar with a few dance forms to feel comfortable going to a ballroom dance. Take your time and enjoy the process of learning to become more experienced in various styles. Then your confidence can shine!
